The Currently Reading Book Tag

Hello everyone, and welcome back! We are now officially in the season of fall! (she said, pretending to not have forgotten to mention this fact in her post from a few days ago) *ahem* To kick off the new season, today I’ll be completing the Currently Reading Book Tag, which Emily @ Frappes and Fiction tagged me for! I love sharing my reading habits with you guys, so this sounds really fun 😆 Thank you so much for tagging me, Emily, and let’s get right into it!

The Questions

How many books do you usually read at once?

I’m currently in the middle of three books, soon to be four. But I prefer reading one book at a time — I find that it helps me immerse myself in the world more. Pretty much the only reason that I pick up more than one book at a time is when I’m reading a required reading book or a book club pick or a particularly dull classic.

How do you decide when to switch between multiple reads?

I tend to just binge read the ones that I’m most interested in 😅 Then I keep myself on a tight schedule on when to finish the other books, especially if it’s for school and not for pleasure.

Do you ever switch bookmarks partway through the book?

Not really? Not unless I lose the bookmark I was using, which would be a nightmare. I usually love using bookmarks. But I’ve been reading a lot more on my Kindle thanks to the pandemic, so bookmarks have pretty much died out of my life. Fortunately, I’m planning to catch up with my piling physical TBR in October, so I’ll finally get the chance to use the bookmarks that are currently rotting in my desk.

What time of day do you read the most?

Whenever I have time, obviously. That usually tends to be in the afternoon, anywhere between 2 and 7 PM, especially now that school has started.

How long do you typically read in one session?

It depends. If life didn’t get in the way, I would probably take “read more, sleep less” to a whole new level. But since life so inconsiderately decided that getting in my way would be its favorite hobby, I usually get to read for 1-2 hour long sessions. Sometimes I finish well over a quarter of the book, or even half if I’m really into it, and sometimes I barely make a dent. I’m a relatively slow reader compared to other members of the online bookish community, which is sort of sad as I used to think I was a fast reader — it’s fine though 😂

Do you read hardcovers with the dust jacket off?

Er… no? Though upon further consideration, that would save me the trouble of having to stand guard over my dust jackets 24/7. Believe me, it’s exhausting.

What position do you mainly use to read?

Usually sitting upright, cross-legged, or with my knees drawn up. Sometimes lying flat on my stomach or on my side with my head propped up. Basically any position that’s comfortable and physically possible to achieve.

Do you take your current read with you everywhere you go?

If I know there’s going to be a wait time, then definitely. And of course we can’t forget a book sleeve to protect my book from outside pollution! Outside pollution can be very dangerous to a book!

How often do you update your Goodreads reading progress?

Time to expose myself.

… I don’t have Goodreads.

I’m very digital-phobic when it comes to social media, and Goodreads counts, too. I’m as frustrated about that as any of you reading this.

Instead, I use the Reading List app to keep track of my books. It’s definitely not as sophisticated as Goodreads in terms of stats and reading challenges and whatnot, but it’s hands-down the best app I’ve used in all my time searching for an organized, practical reading tracker. This app allows you to track your progress in the book(s) you’re reading, add books to your TBR, keep track of the books you’ve finished, create lists to organize your library, and add star ratings and notes to your books. Half stars are a thing here, thank you for asking.

And get this: it’s completely free, and there are no ads.

But to answer the actual question: I update my reading progress every time one of my reading sessions ends, or whenever I need to put down the book I’m in the middle of.

I Tag…

Nina @ Literary Malarkey
Prutha @ The Confessions of A Music and Book Addict
Nefeli @ BiblioNebula
Erin @ Reading On A Star
Beks @ The Little Fiction Fox

As usual, no pressure if you’re not interested in doing the tag!

That’s it for today, bookworms! How about you? Do you prefer reading several books at once or one at a time? Do you consider yourself a fast or slow reader? Am I alone in not using Goodreads? Chat with me in the comments!

Have a beautiful day, everybody!

  1. Thanks for the tag Abby! I recently got Goodreads (like a few months ago) and there is no shame in not having it! I rarely read hardbacks but whenever I do, I don’t take off the dust jacket too 😂

    1. I’m not alone!! 😂 It feels like every single person in the community has a Goodreads account, so sometimes I feel a bit left out of everything, but as you said, there’s no shame in not having Goodreads!

Dust jackets are so pretty when you look at them, but they are also very hard to protect from damage 😩😆 I’m looking forward to reading your answers, Prutha, and thanks for reading!

  2. Nice knowing you use a book sleeve! I use a mesh bag which is kind of the same thing but not as aesthetic haha.

And thank you for sharing about not having Goodreads. As amazing and complex as Goodreads may be, I do sometimes feel a little pressured by other people’s reading challenges etc… so I am going to check out the Reading List app. 💕

    1. I went for so long with a plastic cover to protect my books before discovering the beautiful invention that is the book sleeve! I have a feeling it’s going to be my favorite bookish accessory when this pandemic dies down 🙃

Goodreads is a great community for readers around the world to interact with each other, but it does seem to get a bit overwhelming when you start focusing on everyone else’s stats instead of your own. Ooh, do tell me if you decide to use it! I love using that app and I love the simple, clean interface! Thanks for reading and commenting, Cherelle! 🥰

      1. Ahhh the true love we have for books to take care of them 💕 I am seriously considering getting a book sleeve now! Actualy several hehe

I’ve searched it up and it looks very promising! Especially how it can scan barcodes and has the very minimalistic look! I’ll probably be downloading it soon and focus less on Goodreads. Thank you for that!

  3. It sounds like you are very organised with your reading, Abby! I mostly read one book at a time as well, but earlier this month I found myself reading four at once for various reasons 😂

Reading List sounds like a great app. I was relatively late in joining Goodreads, and there is nothing wrong at all that you haven’t got it.

I loved reading your answers! Have a wonderful day 🥰❤

    1. I relate! I mean to focus on just the one book, but the books just keep piling up and all of a sudden I’m reading four different books at once 😂🤷‍♀️

I’m in love with Reading List! It seems like so much of the action in the bookish community starts with Goodreads, and it’s easy for me to start suffering from FOMO. But as you said, there’s nothing wrong with not being part of that specific niche in the community, and I always have my blog for keeping up with all the new releases!

I’m glad you enjoyed, Stephen! Hope you have a great day as well 💖😊

      1. I might check out Reading List, the ability to award half stars is a major selling point! And yes, definitely! It is great to just do the things you are happy to engage with and be part of. You have a fantastic blog and are an amazing member of the bookish community, with or without Goodreads or any other social media ❤

  4. This is such an interesting tag! I always take my dust cover off because I’m scared I’ll rip it while transporting the book lol. I also like sliding the empty dust jacket back on my shelves so that I can have the book with me but there isn’t an empty slot in my collection haha.

  5. Loved reading your answers, I can relate to so many of them!! It seems like these days, I’m reading several books at once, it’s quite nice, especially if one part is a little slow or if you’re in the mood for something else, and then you can just switch between, but sometimes it gets tricky to balance it out. I usually read during the night on weekdays (if I have time), and I try to read in the mornings on weekends. I’m excited because next week I will have SO much time to read, and I can finally catch up on it all LOL. Haha I change positions a lot too actually — way to test out what works 😀 #Protectthebooks. I only got Goodreads a few months ago, but recently I’ve found The Storygraph and there are so many books I’m interested in reading, I think they did great curating the recommendations! NO ADS?! NICE!! Hope you’re having a great time reading your books!!

    1. Yep, switching between books can definitely get confusing! I find that I focus better on the books I’m reading if they’re all from different genres. Otherwise they all start to blur together…. 😬😂

I’m planning to catch up on my physical TBR in October, and I’m really excited as well! 🎉😆 I’m just planning to let myself relax and not read anything I’m not in the mood for — hopefully that works out 😅

Ooh I’ve heard of The Storygraph! People have been recommending it as an alternative to Goodreads, so it’s nice to see you’re enjoying using it! And I know right, ad-free is crazy especially in this day and age!! Thanks for reading, Eleanor, and wishing you a lovely day! 💕😍

  6. I definitely agree that reading one book at a time is best! 😁 I also only read multiple books at once when one is a buddy read or for school. Or a reread – I squeeze those in whenever I want to 😉 And I’m happy I’m not the only social media phobic blogger around here 😅 I don’t have twitter or snapchat, and I only post on facebook or instagram once in a blue moon 🙈 I do have goodreads, though! I pretty much only use it for tracking the books I read and giving them a star rating, but that’s still something, I guess 😂

    1. Reading one book at a time may not be the most efficient way to cut down your TBR, but it certainly enhances the reading experience! I don’t reread that often, but I imagine that it’s comforting to be able to re-enter a particular fictional universe whenever you want 😆

Social media is extremely scary 😬 I only have Facebook, and even that’s exclusively for school… but I do imagine Goodreads is a very powerful tool for readers! I love tracking my reading progress and seeing how far I am into a book — that’s my kind of aesthetic 😂 Thanks for reading, Naemi! 💕

  7. Wow, what a fun post! I really enjoyed reading it; you have such a fun writing style! And I totally agree with what you said about being “digital-phobic when it comes to social media” – I feel like that a lot of the time too. I have a Goodreads, Twitter, Instagram, etc. But to be honest, they kind of scare me (esp Twitter) so I don’t usually use them all that much. I like blogging the best and all the social media stuff can sometimes get in the way of that and make it more stressful than it needs to be.

    1. Omg thank you Kat for reading! It means so much to me that you enjoyed it — I have been obsessing over your blog from afar for months so your comment just made my day 🥰

I’m so glad I’m not alone! Social media honestly scares me to death 😂 Blogging is definitely where I’m most comfortable being myself! Thanks again for reading Kat, and hope you have a lovely day! 💕

  8. Thank you for tagging me, Abby! I really enjoyed reading your answers and I’m excited to answer these questions too. I used to be a fast reader, but as I grew older and responsibilities became bigger I feel like I’ve slowed down a bit. I’ve found that my reading pace usually depends on how enjoyable or “readable” a book is. That app sounds like a great alternative to Goodreads, yay for half stars!!

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed, Nefeli! I can relate — I used to devour long books that now take me weeks to finish in one or two sittings 😅 But as you said, if it’s a really good book, nothing can stop me from dropping everything to read it! 😂

Reading List is fantastic — definitely one of my favorite apps ever! Hope you have a great day, Nefeli, and thanks for reading and commenting! 💕
