The Outstanding Blogger Award — Take 3!

Hello everyone, and welcome back! I’m back with another blogging award! I know I say this all the time, but the love and support this community is showing me is just so overwhelming 😭🥺 Thank you so much to Julie @ One Book More for the nomination! She posts so much content on a regular basis, and her book reviews are always splendidly written, so go show her some love 💕

And let’s get right into it!

The Rules

  1. Provide the link to the creator’s original award post. (Very important: see why in step 5.) The original post by Colton Beckwith can be found here.
  2. Answer the questions provided.
  3. Create 7 unique questions.
  4. Nominate 10 bloggers. Ensure that they are aware of their nomination. Neither the award’s creator nor the blogger that nominated you can be nominated.
  5. At the end of 2020, every blog that pings-back the creator’s original post will be entered to win the 2020 Outstanding Blogger Award!

The Questions

If you could describe your blog in three words, what would they be?

Passionate Christian bookworm? Flailing over books? Honestly, trying my best is probably the most accurate 😂

Do you have any hobbies other than blogging or reading?

I love listening to musicals, obviously! Hamilton, Six, Something Rotten!, Anastasia, and Hadestown are a couple of favorites from the top of my head. Starry is my newest obsession, though. It’s based on the thousands of letters exchanged between Theo and Vincent van Gogh, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Everyone go listen to the concept recording!

Other than that… I’ve been playing piano for almost ten years now! It’s not my favorite thing to do in the world, but I enjoy learning new pieces, especially from classical composers like Beethoven, who I’ve learned was a very emotional artist. I’m finishing up the first movement of his “Sonata Pathetique” this week 🤗

What advice would you give to new bloggers?

Do whatever you want, and just be yourself! This is a rather cliché piece of advice, but it never gets any less truer (and yes, truer is apparently an actual word). You want to use the most outrageous color scheme anyone has ever witnessed? Why not? You want to start a new trend of going graphic-less on your blog? Go for it! You want to post once a month — or maybe every single day? It’s up to you! Your blog is your safe space, and you have the right to do anything you want with it. The only important thing is the passion you have for what you do, and as long as you have that, you’re good to go.

What is your favorite holiday?

Christmas, hands-down! It’s obviously a special time for me as a Christian, but I also love the holiday atmosphere — it seems like the entire world is in high spirits! I get to spend time with my family, the carols are on at top volume, and it’s even more beautiful when it snows. Though that doesn’t seem to be happening as often as it did once upon a time. Climate change 😕

Which book has been on your TBR the longest?

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia. The fact that I haven’t read this yet is sad. I’ve heard great things about the anxiety rep, and I’m interested in how the author explores Eliza’s online presence. And the romance sounds so sweet!!! I’m just ashamed of myself at this point.

Has having a blog changed your reading habits?

Blogging has exposed me to amazing book recommendations!! From hyped bestsellers, to hidden gems, to must-read literary fiction pieces, they’re all here. I also have been reading more critically, I like to think, and I keep in mind what rating I want to give a book while reading it. I do find myself having to remind myself that reading shouldn’t be stressful more frequently than I did before, although that’s more on me and my mentality rather than blogging itself.

If you could have any animal as a pet, which animal would it be?

Either a cat or a dog! Because I’m basic like that. Cats are so elegant and graceful, while dogs are warm and cuddly… I can’t choose which one I like better! But honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever get a pet. The idea of fleas or mud tracks in the house freaks me out. But you never know — ask me in a couple of years and maybe I’ll have changed my mind!

My Questions

  1. Who is your blogging inspiration?
  2. What are the three most recent additions to your TBR?
  3. What’s your latest non-bookish obsession?
  4. Pick two, drop one: plot, characters, or writing?
  5. Do you play any instruments?
  6. Where do you feel most at peace?
  7. What’s your favorite fall drink?

  1. Congrats on the award!

Thank’s for the great advice. I started my blog back in May of this year, I believe and your advice and this community makes me love blogging all over again!

I love Eliza and her Monsters💙 It’s one of my favourite books of all time.

10 years on piano?!?! That’s awesome. You must be at virtuoso level!

    Again, congrats on the awards🥇🏆

    1. Thank you Eryn! I’m so glad my advice was helpful! I’ve heard the same kind of advice from older bloggers, and it’s helped so much with how I view myself as a blogger. I think it’s definitely one of the most important things to keep in mind when starting on your blogging journey!

Yet another person in love with Eliza and Her Monsters! 🥰 I’m honestly annoyed at myself for not having picked it up yet…. hopefully I can get my hands on it sometime soon….

I don’t know about virtuoso level 😅 — but I’ve definitely invested a lot of my time and effort into the hobby! I still love learning new pieces, although it can get rather exhausting at times 😂

Thank you so much Eryn! I hope you have a lovely day ❤️

      1. I’m a sucker for books with social anxiety rep! Hopefully you can read it soon 🤞🏽!

Ahh, I understand. I’ve played violin for about 5-6 years but I feel like I haven’t really improved. (probably because I need to practice more) Fast classical and pop pieces are fun to play.

Hope you have a great day too 💙

  2. Congrats Abby! 🥳🤩👍

YES I WANT TO GO WATCH PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AGAIN! Ramin Karimloo is the best ✨ (even better than the original Michael Crawford in my opinion haha!) Music of the Night really is hauntingly beautiful! I’m also extremely enraptured by Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, the amount of pain and the power of Sierra Boggess’ voice is astounding! And of course Carlotta is a favourite… 😂 (Ah I’m rambling!) What is your favourite song from Phantom?

Dog person here! 🐕 Because my mother is petrified of cats for some reason and it has influenced me. 😅

Very true! Book blogging has flooded my TBR 😁 and I am so encouraged by all the different perspectives different bloggers have which prompts me to think for myself rather than assume the “popular opinion”! Agree 100% about being more critical!

Great post, enjoyed reading your answers! Congrats once again! 💗

    1. Thank you Cherelle! And YESS I am just so obsessed with Ramin’s voice — so gorgeous 😍 I confess I haven’t listened to the original cast recording in full, but from the songs that I have heard, I can say with confidence that I definitely prefer Ramin and Sierra to Michael and Sarah…. whoops 🤷‍♀️😅

Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again is amazing!!! How does Sierra do it? 🥺🤩 I do have to admit that the first time I heard the song I was extremely confused as to who she was talking to — I thought she was talking about the Phantom at first 😂😂 And Carlotta is ICONIC. Ahhh my favorite song has to be either “Angel of Music,” “The Music of the Night,” “Notes/Prima Donna,” or “Down Once More” (yes I am aware I just listed half the soundtrack) 🥰

Dogs are so cuddly — I’m so jealous of everyone who can choose between being a cat person or a dog person! But same, my mother is a definite dog person, while my father is a cat person, so… I’m torn 😅

Yep, the blogging community has allowed me to think more broadly and diversely about subjects I wouldn’t have considered otherwise! The discussion posts are always so thought-provoking and I’m in constant awe of everyone’s creativity!

I’m so happy you enjoyed, Cherelle! Thanks for reading 💖

    Favorite Holiday is Christmas

My latest obsession- don’t really have a very recent one. I am still obsessed with Les Mis.

Well, I actually own the 25th anniversary of Phantom of Opera- thinking of musicals, wish I could look forward to this coming weekend. I was supposed to see Frozen this coming weekend, but got postponed: so instead planning to watch both animated films.

    1. Yes Christmas is one of the best holidays!! And same, Les Mis never grows old 😆

Oh that’s horrible — I’m so sorry! 😣😭 I’ve heard lovely things about the Frozen musical… I hope that you get to watch it live when this pandemic dies down! But the films are definitely a great alternative. Disney really knows its movie musical game!

Thank you for reading and commenting, Meg! 💖

      1. I heard some of the new songs from the stage show of Frozen- they sound amazing.

Hopefully for Blumenthal’s 21/22 season-Anastasia and Frozen are there.

  4. The advice you give may be cliché, but it is totally right. You cannot estimate the importance of just being yourself! Blogging has changed my reading habits so much, but I am so glad it has because I have discovered an endless list of amazing books and genres and that is very rewarding!

Congrats on the award, Abby ❤ I hope you have a beautiful day!

    1. Yessss! I really can’t emphasize enough that being yourself is the best thing you can do for your blog! Receiving that advice early in my blogging journey has helped so much with how I view myself as a blogger 😊 And one of the best perks of book blogging is definitely all the countless books added to your TBR! Although that might not be a good thing for some of us….. 😅

Thanks so much, Stephen! Thank you for reading and leaving such a lovely comment ❤️

  5. Congrats on being nominated Abby, that’s awesome!

Totally agree with your blogging advice! Reading and blogging is something to enjoy and I think it’s important to blog in a way that suites you. I am a cat person and I’ve always wanted a cat but I’ve never had any pets. I would love to have a cat one day though!

Thank you so much for nominating me!! ❤️

    1. Thank you MT!! I’m so glad you agree with me! It’s so easy to get caught up in the things that you think you have to do on your blog that you forget to do the things that made you want to start blogging in the first place.

And cats are lovely animals! They seem so haughty and standoffish but I love that about them? 😍😂

It’s my pleasure! Your blog was one of the first I discovered when I started blogging, and I love everything you post ❤️ — so excited to read your answers! Thanks for reading and commenting, MT! 💕

      1. Haha yes I love cats with great characters. Our neighbour has a big adorable fluffy white cat who loves cuddles and often comes in our house and makes himself at home. He also has a habit of meowing at our back door when he wants attention. 😂

        Aw thank you. ❤️

  6. Ahhh…. I love all your references to musicals 🙂 It’s impressive that you can play some Beethoven. I’ve tried a few pieces on the piano but they’re all so difficult!

    1. I’m so glad you enjoy my musical-related ramblings! My family is at this point sick of my screech-like singing, so I have to vent it all here on my blog 😂

Beethoven is HARD. I’ve been working on this piece for at least a couple months now, and I’m still not confident in my playing…. best of luck if you do decide to try another piece of his!

Thanks for reading and commenting, Elizabeth! ❤️

      1. I know the feeling… I think my brother is fed up of me constantly raving about musicals! I’ll have to try some Beethoven again. Usually these days I’m just learning songs by playing chords but it might be time for a challenge 🙂

  7. Thank you so much Abby!! I love musicals too although I’m a bit of a baby and have only watched Hamilton so I guess I’m not a true musical fan 😭 but I can confidently say I was a theatre kid for three years XD

    1. It’s my pleasure, Adi!! And omg another musical fan!!! And I can relate — for a long time Hamilton was the only musical I knew about as well 😅 And if you’re a theatre kid nobody can stop you from calling yourself a musical fan!! Our love for Broadway transcends all labels 😂😂

Thanks for reading and commenting — chatting with you is always a pleasure 💗💖

    1. I’m so happy you enjoyed, Julie! And Les Mis is an oldie but a goodie. Listening to “Confrontation” still gives me chills 🤩 And I’m glad you could relate. My life could be summed up as “trying my best” at this point 😂 Thanks again for tagging me, Julie, and I hope you have a lovely day!

  8. Congrats on the award! Your advice was great, I definitely second all of this 😉

And you have to read Eliza and Her Monsters!! I absolutely love that book 😊

Also, it’s so cool that you play piano! I’ve also been playing for around eight years, but my first instrument is violin, so I do tend to practice that a lot more and am way better at it than at piano 😅 But I agree, making music is a great way to spend your free time!

    1. Thank you Naemi! Receiving that advice really helped me on my blogging journey, and I think it’s important for all bloggers (old and new) to keep in mind! 🤗

Another Eliza and Her Monsters fan!! I kid you not when I tell you I haven’t read a single negative review of that book. I really need to pick it up as soon as possible…. 😂😅

Ooh a violinist in the house! I’ve only ever played piano my entire life (except for my brief fifth grade stint into flute) so I’m always in awe of people who manage more than one instrument at a time! And yes to making music during your free time! Especially classical music. Let’s just say my family much prefers Beethoven to my renditions of Hamilton 😂

Thank you for such a wonderful comment, Naemi — chatting with you always brightens my day! 💕

      1. Yes, don’t delay Eliza!! 😁 I wouldn’t say it’s completely perfect, but I just love the story and the writing so much that I’m willing to overlook the one character arc that I thought was a bit unrealistic. It’s such a wonderful and relatable book!

And in my experience, having two instruments just means I have to split my time between them, so sometimes I envy people who have the time to focus specifically on one 😉 I guess there’s no right way to do it 😂 Thankfully, though, everyone in my family is pretty musical, so they’re very open-minded to whatever I feel like practicing. If I feel like belting out “The Room Where It Happened” or something, they usually don’t bat an eye. (Though secretly, I’m pretty sure my parents also prefer when I practice Beethoven 😂😂).

  9. Congratulations on the award, you deserve it completely!! Lovely post 😀 I enjoyed reading your answers! Sonata Pathetique is a very expressive piece, and the first movement is full of character and emotion, I enjoyed playing it! I hope you are too ☺️

    1. Thank you so much Eleanor!! And yes I am completely enjoying myself! I feel exhausted every time I run through it, but I love how emotional it is, for lack of a better word 😅 So glad to hear you enjoyed playing it as well! Thanks for this lovely comment 💕
