The Medieval Queens Book Tag 👑

hello everyone!! i bet you weren’t expecting me to post again so soon 😆 i’ve decided that i’m going to try to post every two weeks. emphasis on the “try,” but hopefully this is a feasible plan??

today i’m back with one of the many, many tags that i have pending—the medieval queens book tag! i have a deep love for obscure european history and obviously women’s history, so thank you so much to the lovely naemi @ a book owl’s corner and m.t. @ the last book on the left for tagging me for this! and shoutout to jess @ jessticulates for coming up with this amazing idea.

let’s get right into it!

EMPRESS MATILDA (1102-1167)

after her father, henry i, died naming her his heir, matilda’s cousin, stephen, subsequently took the throne for himself. matilda never stopped fighting for what was rightfully hers. though she would never be named queen of england in her own right, she was able to convince stephen to name her son, the future henry ii, his successor over his own children. choose a book with a protagonist who stands their ground.

can i just say, she sounds like an absolute legend.

my mind immediately went to talin from skyhunter by marie lu for this question. she’s seen her entire world burnt down when the federation conquered basea, her people massacred or forced to assimilate, her mother forced to live in the slums—and on top of that faces so much prejudice from her fellow strikers for being a refugee. and somehow she still never wavers in her loyalty to mara and her belief that it is worth protecting, even with all its flaws. what an inspiration. i need book 2 asap to see where her character development goes after that awful cliffhanger (although i’ve been hearing some mixed opinions about steelstriker).

ELEANOR OF AQUITAINE (1122-1204)

before she married henry ii and became queen of england in 1152, eleanor was queen of france as the wife of louis vii. she sought an annulment from her marriage to louis, and he eventually agreed because 15 years of marriage had produced no sons, only for eleanor to go on to have eight children with henry—five of whom were sons. ouch! choose a book or series in which the heroine has more than one romantic relationship.

alina from the shadow & bone trilogy has THREE love interests, so i think she’s definitely a valid answer for this prompt. from what i’ve seen, the entire fandom is split fourways over how her romantic relationships played out in the last book: the alarkling people, the nikolina people, the malina people, and the alina-should-have-ended-up-single people. i personally am a malina shipper and i think the netflix show has won many people to my side 😇

ELEANOR OF CASTILE (1241-1290)

a keen patron of literature and a successful businesswoman in her own right, eleanor was edward i’s first wife. he was so heartbroken when she died that he erected the eleanor crosses, twelve stone crosses marking the places where her body rested overnight on its journey from lincolnshire, where she died, to her burial place in london. three of the crosses still survive today. choose a bittersweet book.

it’s been a while, but i found rent a boyfriend by gloria chao incredibly bittersweet. chloe and drew were wonderfully sweet together, but there were also so many serious discussions about toxic family relationships and asian-american communities. that being said, the blurb does say that chloe is renting a boyfriend to impress her asian parents, and that the love interest drew has been disowned by his parents for dropping out of college—so maybe i shouldn’t have been too surprised.

ISABELLA OF FRANCE (1295-1358)

often known as the “she-wolf of france,” isabella was edward ii’s wife. unfortunately for edward, he wasn’t particularly good at being king, and isabella soon grew tired of his (possibly homosexual) relationship with his favorite, hugh despenser. after she began an affair with english nobleman roger mortimer while on a diplomatic mission to france, the pair returned to england with an army and she deposed edward and acted as regent until their son, the future edward iii, came of age. choose a book where the romance overtook the plot.

i’ll have to go with gul and cavas in hunted by the sky by tanaz bhathena. this seems to be a rather unpopular opinion, but i was so disappointed after finishing this. i feel like the author couldn’t decide whether the romance was going to be a slow burn or instalove up until the very end of the book. i definitely see the chemistry between them and maybe would have shipped them in another situation, but ughhh. these two kids saw each other like four times and then they suddenly couldn’t live without each other. instalove with subpar execution is the worst thing that can happen in a book.

PHILIPPA OF HAINAULT (1310/15-1369)

queen of england as the wife of edward iii, philippa was beloved by the english people for her compassion and kindness. the queen’s college, oxford, founded in 1341, is named in her honor. choose a book set at a university.

i’m not a huge fan of rainbow rowell, but there’s genuinely nothing better i can think of than fangirl. the book begins with cath going off to university and is all about her coming-of-age there, ft. lots of fanfiction and sibling conflict. i could very much relate to cath’s introversion in her new surroundings—i’m already dreading going off to college and having to make new friends there 😭 i’m not as antisocial as cath is, but it’s still a terrifying prospect! maybe i’ll be able to meet a cute starbucks barista of my own, though 😆

JOAN OF NAVARRE (1368-1437)

joan was henry iv’s second wife. six years after his death, joan was accused of attempting to poison her stepson, henry v, through witchcraft and was imprisoned for four years until he ordered her release, just six weeks before he suddenly died. choose a book about witches.

i completely blanked on this question. there’s obviously roald dahl’s the witches, but i didn’t want to steal naemi’s answer 😅 so here’s another 2022 release to add to your tbr instead! the very secret society of irregular witches by sangu mandanna sounds so wholesome and so amazing. i don’t drift toward books about witches too often, but i’m more than willing to make an exception for stories featuring a mysterious manor, a grumpy librarian, three chaotic young witchlings, and life lessons about finding where you belong—not to mention a found family 🤩 and isn’t this cover absolutely adorable 🥹

i tag…

cherry @ letters to the lost 💌 kerri @ kerri mcbooknerd 💌 jan @ inkspun tales 💌 queenie @ the erudite labyrinth 💌 & anyone else who’d like to give this a go!

i’d love you guys answer these questions! be sure to send me a ping so that i can see what you all come up with 😄

and that’s the end of the post! a quick one to compensate for the 2k words i dumped on you last time. let me know what you thought of this post and what you would have put for the answers! also, give me all the bittersweet book recs. i have an unhealthy obsession with endings that make me cry 😶‍🌫️

but otherwise, that’s it for today! see you soon and until then, happy reading! 🤗

  1. I’m both team Malina and team alina-should-have-ended-up-single. The show’s mal completely won me over, I must say! (I might add a controversial opinion: he wasn’t as much of a bad person in the books as people make him out to be)
Skyhunter has been on my tbr for a looong time, I’m glad you enjoyed reading it!!
I have already done this tag on my blog, but I really appreciate that you tagged me💕😃

    1. omg i 100% agree with everything you said, controversy and all!! compared to the darkling, book mal was just an angsty teenage boy and i definitely don’t think he deserves all of the hate 🫠 and yess i hope you love skyhunter when you get around to it!

oops that’s my bad for not checking! 😅 but thank you so much for reading and the lovely comment jan! ❤️

  2. Ooooh, I had completely forgotten I’d tagged you for this, but I’m so glad I did because I loved reading your answers, Abby! 🥰 First of all – yes, team Malina all the way!! And then you mentioned Fangirl, which is one of my favorite books ever!!!

I wouldn’t worry too mucy about college, though. Socially awkward me managed just fine, so I’m sure you’ll do great, too! 😂

And bittersweet book recommendations? Well, Second Chance Summer, A Little Life, A Monster Calls, The Penderwicks in Spring, and The How and the Why are some of my favorite cry-worthy books, but I know for a fact that you’ve already read some of them… So if you find any good new recommendations, let me know!

ahh naemi i can’t tell you how much i appreciate these recs! especially second chance summer and the how & the why, which have both been on my radar for way too long. and obviously the penderwicks series is a fave for a reason 😍 i’m constantly on the hunt for more books to cry about, so i’ll definitely let you know if i find any noteworthy ones! (i just might have to write a separate post dedicated to bittersweet book recs!) 💕

  5. Ahhh I LOVED reading your answers for this!!
And Mal from the show is a LOT better than Mal from the books haha! Alarkling really never worked for me, they barely had chemistry tbh 😂! And I definitely preferred to view Alina and Nikolai as just friends!!!
    Loved this! ❤

    1. ahh thank you so much suhani!! 💖 yess i’m glad to hear you agree! honestly, villain x heroine has never been my vibe, so i completely second you on alarkling 😆 and alina and nikolai had such an adorable relationship that i would have hated to complicate with romance.

thank you again suhani!! you’re the sweetest 🥺
